AADS 1230 The History of Spirituals and Gospel Music: Roots in West Africa

This course provides an in-depth look at the history, development, and worldwide influence of spirituals and gospel music, tracing their origins back to the cultural and musical traditions of West Africa. Through a mix of academic lectures, readings, field trips, and performance workshops, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of how West African musical traditions shaped these genres and their impact on African-American culture. By studying spirituals and gospel music both as cultural expressions and as tools for social change, students will see how African heritage has persisted in the diaspora and remains relevant today in modern music. Field trips to cultural landmarks, interactions with local musicians, and performance-based activities will give students a unique, hands-on opportunity to connect with music and history in a meaningful and engaging way.
