Fighting for Black Lives: Health and Social Movements

This course is designed to introduce students to health-related social movements within the African Diaspora. First, we will investigate theoretical perspectives that shape social movements, while paying particular attention to the development of social movements origins, structures, strategies and actors. We will then explore specific health conditionsand Black peoples efforts to alleviate health burdens and inequities. Topics will include, but not limited to, the Black Panther Partys campaign to address sickle cell anemia, U.S. and global HIV/AIDS efforts, and the intersection of criminal justice reform and health initiatives.
