Masterworks of Russian Art

This course will examine the development of Russian art from the Medieval period to the post-Soviet era, with a special focus on how art reflected and promoted the tumultuous changes in Russian society. We will survey a wide range of movements and styles, including Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Critical Realism, Suprematism, Constructivism, Socialist Realism, Nonconformist Art, and artistic groups such as the Wanderers, the World of Art, and Moscow Conceptualists. The course will offer a deep dive into the works of celebrated artists such as Bryullov, Repin, Vrubel, Goncharova, Malevich, Pirosmani, Kandinsky, Popova, Chagall, Petrov-Vodkin, Deineka, Komar and Melamid, analyzing their contributions within broader historical contexts.
