Indigenous Art and Architecture of Latin America

This course surveys the Indigenous art and architectural traditions of Meso-, and South America, from the hemisphere's earliest population to the emergence of Indigenous Empires in the fifteenth through the sixteenth centuries. The course is divided into two geographic units, the first half centered on Mesoamerica, and the second on South America. We will examine these two regions' distinct artistic developments of writing systems, urban planning, road networks, temple architecture, commemorative sculpture, weaving practices, and ritual body modification. Students will apply hands-on knowledge as they learn how to distinguish the art traditions specific to each of these cultural spheres in their respective historical contexts.
