Building Biotech Companies: From Molecular Innovation to Market Impact

This course examines how molecular and chemical innovation becomes venture-backed biotechnology companies and ultimately approved medicines. Emphasis is placed on therapeutic modality selection, translational decision-making, and company creation, rather than on detailed medicinal chemistry optimization. Students will explore how discoveries in chemistry and molecular science intersect with biology, clinical development, regulation, and venture finance. Through case studies, guest speakers, and a team-based startup project, students will learn how chemists help drive biotechnology innovation and entrepreneurship. The course is restricted to seniors and graduate students. It is appropriate for science majors and also students majoring in management, entrepreneurship or business who have a rudimentary scientific background.
