CHEM 5581 Solid State Chemistry
An introduction to solid state chemistry, a branch of chemistry that is concerned with the synthesis, structure, properties, and applications of solid materials. We will cover concepts such as crystal structures, defects and diffusion properties, bonding in solids, crystal field theory, energy bands and varied electronic behavior shown by solids. Emerging directions in solid state chemistry, including electrochemical storage devices, will be discussed as well. CHEM4475 Physical Chemistry I is a pre-requisite. CHEM3322 Inorganic Chemistry and CHEM4476 Physical Chemistry II are recommended as prerequisites but it is acceptable for either to be taken concurrently.
