The Cultural Politics of Film and TV History

Satisfies one of two writing intensive courses required with the Communication major. Restricted to Juniors and Seniors. This course explores the evolution of film and television genre in the United States. By examining the sociopolitical context of different eras, students will gain an understanding of how political ideologies, major historical events, cultural shifts, and technological advancements influence the production of television and film. From science fiction to sitcoms to superhero franchises, among many other screen genres, students will engage with television and film analysis theories and methods to illuminate American sociopolitical culture over the decades. By the course's end, students will demonstrate their understanding of course themes through both lively conversation and writing assignments.
