Korean Cinema

South Korea today is home to one of the most vibrant film industries in the world. This course introduces students to a broad range of Korean films made between the 1950s and the present. Some of these films were made as popular entertainments, others as cerebral works of art, and still others refuse any simple categorization. As we watch these films we will explore Korean history and culture, think about Korean cinemas relationship to Hollywood and European cinematic traditions, and grapple with questions of genre and auteurism.
