HIST 1030 Global Environmental History I
This course is a historical survey of the centuries 1000-1800 CE and traces the global environmental changes and impacts brought about by the rise of empire, exploration, and conquest that have shaped the modern world. This course uses the lens of environmental history to examine different parts of the globe as focal points to understand the complex historical processes behind modern-day transnational relationships, values, and ideas. As part of the Core Curriculum, this course seeks to broaden students' intellectual horizons by exposing them to new places, periods, and perspectives. In so doing, students will learn to work with primary and secondary sources and to question dominant narratives about Western civilization through the environment.
