HIST 2489 The Contested American South
This course introduces undergraduates to the history of the American South from about the 17th to the 21st century. By interpreting letters, memoirs, essays, films, and other portraits of (and by) the Souths people, we will study and interrogate the changing meanings of the South as a region, concept, and homeplace. We will reexamine ideas about the region, its geography, and its history (e.g. who is, or has been, a Southerner), as well as the regions stories of confrontation, conflict, and collaboration.
