The Study and Writing of History: African Decolonization in Global Perspective

History Major Standing.After decades of organizing and protest, African colonies began to gain independence from imperial rule in the late 1950s. Decolonization movements combined local anti-colonial struggles on the African continent with the involvement of foreign actors from the Americas, Europe, and Asia, both in solidarity with African activism and in opposition to it. This course offers students the opportunity to closely examine this exciting historical process of political upheaval and social transformation by undertaking a research project on a specific aspect or case of African decolonization.
