HIST 3473 Study and Writing of History: Immigration and Citizenship in Modern America

History Major Standing. This course examines US immigration history from the second half of the 19th century to the present. We will read a range of sources to explore major issues and themes connected to the development of US immigration and citizenship policy and to explore how immigrants and Americans both drove and responded to those policies. Using the records of the Immigration and Naturalization Service as well as other library collections, students will conceptualize, research, and write a major paper on an immigration-related topic of their choice. In the process they will become acquainted with the process of historical research and writing.
