HIST 4236 Britain in the Great War 1914-1918
Why did the United Kingdom move from a position of splendid isolation to become one of the major allies against the Central Powers? Despite cultural and familial ties with Germany, Britain waged war enthusiastically against the Germans. These and topics such as the need for a coalition government, the introduction of conscription, the role of women in British society, the Easter Rising of 1916, why was Britain's imperial might not enough to prevail against the Central Powers without American help, how the war ended, and the economic and human costs will be intensely examined.
