HIST 4837 Women in Ireland, 1880-1945: The Rights and Duties of Citizenship

This course explores womens participation in the political, cultural, and social life of Irelandfrom the late nineteenth century until the end of the Second World War. The political crisis and social transformation over this period encouraged debates about the citizenship rights and duties ofwomen and men, especially as the country negotiated its status from a member of the United Kingdom to an independent nation. In this course, we center the experiences of Irish women, exploring how they shaped and were shaped by internal political developments and internationalideas and movements. Using secondary literature and a wide range of primary sources, including pamphlets, newspapers, letters, and interviews, we will explore themes including war, revolution, feminist activism, cultural expression, leadership, remembrance, and resistance.
