HIST 4838 Newsworthy Women: British & Irish Women's Press History
This course surveys the history of British and Irish female contributions to print journalism from the late Georgian era through the interwar era, 1830-1935. It considers gender norms, class and power dynamics, and the evolving identities of women creating and consuming print journalism. Topics covered include the role of women in the profession of journalism, the types of content created for women, the female reading audience, and the connection between press and politics. Together we will develop our critical understanding of female journalism in Britain and Ireland and work to examine the significance of print journalism in historic and contemporary terms.
