HIST 7515 Graduate Colloquium: Intellectual History: European, American, Global

This graduate course surveys key debates in the historiography of modern intellectual life since the eighteenth century. We will approach intellectuals and ideas in light of the methodological concerns of the historians who study them, examining key developments in Europe and the United States during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries before considering the recent, belated global turn in intellectual history. Topics may include rationalism, romanticism, liberalism, Marxism, transcendentalism, pragmatism, psychoanalysis, phenomenology, existentialism, postcolonialism, postmodernism, gender and queer theory, and political theology.
