Note to Journalism minors: this course satisfies the requirement for an elective with a craft" orientation." Community journalism is, in many ways, the most distilled version of the craft. The best local reporters are deeply embedded in a city, town, or neighborhood. They know the issues that matter to people. They've cultivated relationships with community leaders, local officials, business owners, activists, and advocates. They are accessible, visible, and, thus, accountable for what they write and how they conduct themselves. In this course, student journalists will gain hands-on experience by covering neighborhoods in Greater Boston and working with the professor to get their articles published by hyperlocal news outlets. The class will also take critical look at the state of local journalism in the United States and examine trends in reporting, media innovation, and business models. This course has a prerequisite: JOUR2000 OR permission from the professor.
