JOUR 2315 The Global Health Beat
NOTE TO JOURNALISM MINORS: THIS COURSE SATISFIES THE REQUIREMENT FOR AN ELECTIVE WITH A " CRITICAL" ORIENTATION.Over the past 70 years, global health has become its own industry, particularly with the rise of epidemics such as HIV, Ebola, and COVID-19. Today, the entire global health enterprise is under stress, tested by climate change, President Trump's America-first foreign policy, and declining funding from other world powers. Reliable, on-the-ground, analytical public health journalism has never been more critical. What is the impact of Trump's dismantling of USAID? What will the pullback mean for the millions of people whose livelihoods depend on foreign aid? Is humanity ready for tomorrow's pathogens? And how should we tell these narratives? This course is designed for students interested in practicing global health journalism, as well as those who want to learn more about the history of global health, how it's changing, and the structures, politics, and organizations that shape it.
