Making Sports Media

This course may be used to satisfy one of four electives required in the Communication major. This course introduces, examines, and practices different forms of sports broadcasting and media. It ranges from reporting to hosting and anchoring, to play-by-play and analysis, as well as debate programming in both linear and non-linear formats. Drawing on the instructor's expertise in covering professional sports, the course aims to deconstruct the nuances of managing relationships with star athletes, navigating access in relation to the ideals of independent journalism, dealing with promotional and/or commercial pressures, and the impact of hot-take theater on driving the national sports landscape. Several notable guest speakers will stop by to share their experiences in the field, and there will be coordination with the BC Athletic Department to experience live event coverage
