LAWS 3340 Art Law

This Course surveys a range of legal issues arising in the creation, distribution, transaction, and repatriation of works of visual art. The class is reading, lecture, and discussion-intensive alternating among these to encourage immersion in the material. The scope of art covered by this course particularly in primary markets (artists and galleries), secondary markets (auction houses) and non-market sector (state actors, museums, and cultural heritage). Students will complete transactional document drafting exercises and memoranda. A background in intellectual property law or the art market may be helpful but not required.
