LAWS 3362 Blockchain, Cryptocurrencies, and Digital Assets

Welcome to a course where blockchain assets meet law. This course is designed to give students an understanding of blockchain technology, cryptocurrencies and other digital assets, and their interaction with law and legal practice. It explores the legal issues arising from innovative business models that use peer-to-peer networks, distributed ledger technology and smart contracts. During the course, we will analyze major blockchain networks and assets, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, and examine the benefits and challenges of asset tokenization. We will also explore the business and legal issues connected to digital asset trading, custody and decentralized finance (DeFi). Students will learn about stablecoins, memecoins, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and central bank digital currencies, while examining practical legal questions concerning ownership, governance, regulatory classification, and investor and consumer protection.
