LAWS 6684 Child, Parent, and State: Legal Trends and Calls for Reform

In this course we will first examine the legal rights and responsibilities of the child, the parent, and the state, and the ways in which these rights and responsibilities intersect in law and policy. We will then engage in a deep analysis of specific policies and practices that advocates have identified as in need of reform, in areas such as education, child welfare/family regulation, and juvenile delinquency. This analysis will consider the interests of the child, the parent, and the state as well as various methods to achieve reform.
