LAWS 8426 Mediation and Conflict Resolution

An introduction to negotiation principles and the theory and practice of conflict resolution alternatives with a particular focus on mediation from the perspectives of the mediator and the advocate representing clients in the mediation process. Mediation is an assisted negotiation with all the parties to a dispute where the mediator serves as a third party neutral facilitating the resolution of the dispute. The course includes multiple opportunities for oral presentations including participation in simulated cases with students role playing as mediators and/or parties. The course also serves to instruct and demonstrate techniques for organizing and promoting group consensus and the avoidance of conflict.
