Philosophy of Love and Friendship

The course examines influential philosophical accounts of the nature of love and friendship, approaching the topic from various angles: from erotic love to the love of the divine, from interpersonal friendship to love of self. Readings will draw from various sources, both historical and contemporary, including: classical dialogues and treatises, essays, scripture, psychoanalysis, sermons, political science, and literary studies. Among other questions, we will explore the following: What is love? What is friendship and who is a true friend? Do we need love and friendship to be happy? Do we love someones qualities because of who they are, or do we love who they are because of their qualities? Are friends replaceable? Can we love our enemies?
