PHIL 5010 Africana Philosophy

A comprehensive investigation into the diverse intellectual traditions of the African diaspora. The course examines how historical conditions of exclusion and displacement have forged distinct ontological and epistemological frameworks. Students will critically engage with foundational figures such asW.E.B. Du Bois, andFrantz Fanon. We will interrogate the Africana concept through a gendered and hemispheric lens incorporating the critical interventions of Black feminist philosophers includingAnna Julia Cooper, Sylvia Wynter, and others. Moving beyond the Anglophone tradition, the course also integrates Afro-Latin and Afro-Caribbean perspectives to evaluate the role of creolization, resistance, and social agency in redefining global philosophical discourse.
