PHIL 6401 Plotinus On Providence
Plotinus Treatise on Providence is a complex study of the presence of evil in the sensible cosmos. Plotinus seeks to reconcile the conflicts among living things for survival and their relation to one another as prey and predator. The human soul is unique in having an autonomy that lower animals and higher beings are exempt from. Plotinus approaches these problems from two complementary points of view, centering first on reconciling providence for individual sensible things and then on how the whole sensible order is woven together as the best and most beautiful, Platos challenge in theTimaeus.
