Plato and Aristotle on Hope and Expectation

In this course we will examine the views of Plato and Aristotle on the moral psychology of hope and expectation. Topics will include: the psychology of anticipation and hope, the role of anticipation in motivating movement and action, the value of hope for living well, the rationality of hope, and the philosophy of emotions that involve expectations (such as fear and confidence). We will also look at Platos and Aristotles views in their historical context and in comparison with contemporary work in the philosophy of hope. Major texts include: Platos Philebus, Apology, Phaedo; Aristotles De Anima, Ethics, Rhetoric.
