PHIL 7495 Heidegger's Being and Time: A Critical Reading

This course offers a close, critical reading and analysis of Martin Heideggers Being and Time (1927), one of the most important works of twentieth-century philosophy. The course will focus on Heideggers radical transformation of his mentor Edmund Husserls transcendental phenomenology. Topics covered will include: the question of the meaning of Being, the phenomenological method (descriptive versus hermeneutics), intentionality versus the transcendence of Dasein, intersubjectivity (Mitsein) versus empathy, the nature of human existence, anxiety and authenticity, lostness in the everyday world, and Heideggers radical description of the meaning of human being-in-the-world.
