You have 4 months to learn: Latina and Latino people in the USA

In his Saturday Night Live monologue, Bad Bunny quipped that anyone who didnt understand what hed just said in Spanish had four months to learn before his 2026 Super Bowl Halftime Show. More than a joke, the remark reflected the growing Latino population in the United States and its increasing influence on American culture. The goal of this course is to give an overview of the Latino experience in the country and its influence in the American social landscape. Through sociological lenses, we will discuss the political, economic, cultural and social issues that shape the Latino experience in the USA. The course will familiarize students with debates regarding immigration, citizenship, and racial boundaries. It will also touch on topics such as religion, health care access, sports, and education. Moreover, the course will sociologically examine what it means to be Latin American in the United States, while engaging with the diversity encompassed by the category commonly labeled Latino.
