THTR 3347 Costume Design

Students are not required to have advanced drawing skills to take this class. There are several class sessions devoted to learning and practicing drawing and painting techniques. The art of costume design integrates artistic imagination with the practical concerns of theatrical production. This course is designed to develop the fundamental skills used by costume designers, focusing particular attention on character analysis, period research, and visual communication. The course will include exercises and projects to develop skills in figure drawing, use of color, and rendering in watercolor. Students will learn how to communicate character, mood, and style through costume following three learning tracks: (1) developing the concept and theory of the design (2) implementing the design while considering sustainability and (3) communicating the design through figure drawing and fabric selection.
