UNAS 4000 Danger and Possibility: Freedom in a Technological World

What would it mean to be free in a technological and efficiency-driven world? Our culture promises success through mastery: master your productivity, your career, your body, nature, the market, even AI, before it masters you. This HMS Bridge senior seminar asks how we might instead develop a free relationship with technology, instead of one of mastery, through the integration of humanities, management, and science. Through various case studies, Martin Heideggers Question Concerning Technology, and contemporary live issues, we will learn to live freely, both with respect to technology as such and also in your own professional life, post-graduation. The course draws on BCs Catholic Intellectual Tradition to distinguish knowledge and expertise from true wisdom: the capacity to integrate what we know in pursuit of truth, human dignity, and human flourishing. We will connect ideas across disciplines, collide competing perspectives, and combine insights to make wiser judgments. This course will serve as a purposeful culmination of your BC education. You have spent your education crossing fields. This course asks why that crossing matters.
