Critical Thinking and Diagnostic Reasoning- Is This to be My Future?

This course is designed for pre-Health majors whove had or are currently having clinical experience on which to reflect. As a pre-Health student, you have spent time during your undergraduate years shadowing and assisting healthcare clinicians, observing both the science and the art of clinical care; acquiring knowledge, attitudes, and skills to make you a compelling graduate program applicant and healthcare professional. As you prepare for the next steps in your journey beyond BC, are you seeking confirmation and validation of your career choice, particularly as you now prepare to credibly represent yourself when applying to and interviewing with health professional programs? You've observed clinicians gather and diagnostically interpret the information given to them by their patients. Have you marveled at how your mentors skillfully communicate and empathize with their patients and their challenging life journeys? Have you asked yourself if and when you will be able to relate to patients and reason in this empathetic and diagnostic manner, confirming the validity of your career choice? This seminar will challenge you to reflectively appraise your vocational journey and career choice as you explore the core skills a clinician employs when engaging with a patient - bringing both art and science to bear. You will not only engage the course content in a self-reflective manner - drawing upon past and current clinical experiences - but will actively demonstrate your growing proficiency with these core clinical skills while role-playing in simulated encounters with peers, culminating in a formal interview with a professional standardized patient. Throughout the process, you will be expected to discerningly reflect on the originating inspirations and confirmatory moments in your decision to become a clinician, as you simultaneously integrate your clinical/volunteer experiences, while deepening your exposure to/preparation for carrying out the interviewing skills and diagnostic reasoning processes youll one day employ in your career as a clinician.
