Biography

A prolific writer and speaker, Michael James focuses on the intersection of religion and intellectual culture in higher education and its meaning for institutional leadership, faculty teaching and scholarship, student formation, and Catholic higher education for the common good. As a full-time faculty member in the department of Educational Leadership & Higher Education, he coordinates the MA degree program concentration in Spirituality, Faith and Formation in Higher Education and the Ed.D. concentration in Catholic Higher Education. As Director of the Institute for Administrators in Catholic Higher Education, James leads an annual global seminar for administrators and scholars—a highly regarded opportunity to address enduring issues such as developing a Catholic campus culture and nurturing the Catholic intellectual tradition. His current role on the editorial board of Claritas: A Journal of Dialogue and Culture continues his history of engagement with professional journals, including editor at both The Journal of Catholic Education and The Journal of Catholic Higher Education. He previously served as Vice President of the Association of Catholic Colleges & Universities and as a member on the planning committee for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Annual Catholic Social Ministry Gathering. James also served in a number Institutional leadership roles including Dean for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs at Mount Marty University, South Dakota and Assistant Director for Undergraduate Admissions at his alma mater the University of Notre Dame, IN where he earned his bachelor’s degree followed by his master’s degree and doctorate at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. His work is accessible to a wide range of audiences including Hesburgh of Notre Dame: Assessments of a Legacy (2023) and Five Steps to Effective Student Leadership (2013). He has presented throughout the United States, and globally including Brazil, Chile, Jordan, Israel, Poland, Australia and Kenya.
